TOP TEN TIPS FOR TRAVEL IN 2003 - KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Whether you're backpacking in India, snowboarding in Switzerland or sunning yourself in Cyprus, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises that you 'Know Before You Go' and summarises some 'Top Ten Tips' below to help you for the best break possible in 2003.

1. Read the Travel Advice - check the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) web site www.fco.gov.uk/knowbeforeyougo or call 020 7008 0232/0233 for country-specific advice and top tips.

2. Get comprehensive travel insurance - check that your cover is appropriate to your needs and remember to declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer.

3. Find out about where you are going - get a good guidebook and get to know your destination. Find out about local laws and customs.

4. Ensure you have a valid passport and the necessary visas – check with the relevant Embassy/High Commission for entry requirements.

5. Plan to stay healthy - check what vaccinations you may need at least 6 weeks before you go. Seek advice from your GP or from the Department of Health web site http://www.doh.gov.uk/traveladvice or by calling the Department of Health on 0800 555 777.

6. Make your travel arrangements with care - make sure your travel agent is an ABTA member and, if flying, make sure your holiday package is ATOL protected.

7. Let other people know where you are going - make copies of your passport, insurance policy and 24-hour emergency number, and ticket details – leave copies with family and friends.

8. Stay in touch - leave a copy of your itinerary and a way of contacting you such as e-mail, with family and friends.

9. Take enough money for your trip and some back-up funds e.g. travellers cheques, sterling, Euros or US dollars.

10. Take the contact details of the nearest British consulate with you.
